Subject: RE: Hydraulic oil coloring

Faunsdale, AL
Used to have a supplier that delivered bulk oil. To try to make it less likely that a mixup was made putting transmission fluid (Chevron 1000 fluid) in engines and 15W40 in transmissions, they supplied a red pigment that was added whenever the transmission fluid tank was filled.

Still had some memorable screwups over the years including the kid that pulled the 2440 tractor up to the tanks and pumped transmission oil into the engine while checking dipstick on the transmission. Not sure why he stopped other than maybe it wouldn’t hold any more in the engine. We were there working nearby and heard there was a problem immediately when he started the engine. We got him shut down after he drove about 10 feet.

Oil is very clear…..some oil is……other is normal brown color. The clear stuff is very hard to see on dipstick. It helps to sand the surface of the stick on one side with coarse paper to make the oil level show up better.

Have also had the problem with people adding oil when it’s already above the upper sight glass. I guess that’s better than letting run low because it’s below both of them.
