Subject: AC problems due to paint puncturing wiring

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
This probably doesn't pertain to you but might be helpful for someone else. Some years ago I purchased a used Deere 9770 combine. The first harvest season, I had intermittent error codes from the Air Conditioning system. The code would cause the AC to quit working.

A tech from the selling dealership came out several times in an effort to try to track this down. Finally he had me sit in the cab with a diagnostic screen showing on the small Command Arm display. He systematically bent and wiggled on the wiring throughout the combine. I was instructed to watch the screen for any changes. He started wiggling and bending the various wiring harness around the engine and compressor. Eventually, I noticed a change in a value and relayed that to him.

He had been wiggling on a bundle of wires that were covered with woven loom. He carefully cut open the woven portion of the loom with a knife which exposed the wires. It appears the area had been painted after the wiring had been installed at the factory. The paint had penetrated the loom netting and dried to a sharp point. This caused no problem at first but due to vibration, the sharp point eventually shorted two wires together at times. The fix was rather simple as he just replaced the damaged section of wire and repaired the loom. This took care of that problem.
