There is probably a internal slosh baffle where that crack developed. They break out at the spot welds on many tanks. First of all you probably should not use flame on a gas tank, so it has less chance to go BOOM! Now I will admit it that I have done the same with a torch and brazening rods., but apparently, I must be becoming more scared of it going boom with age. Silver solder would be an option if you insist on using the torch. I seem to think ypou would need less heat on the metal but I might be wrong.
Secondly, there is a good chance that the seam you are welding by is a soldered joint, and that it contaminated the brazening and made life miserable as the solder ran out of the seam and unsoldered itself making a bigger leak..
I guess I would use an old-fashioned process and heat up a big old copper headed soldering Iron with the torch and solder that crack. NOT braze it..It is a Lower temperature repair and less chances of cracking and less chances of BOOM too!
Last year we welded a diesel tank on the 1680 combine with the Miller 250 wire feeder. Lived to talk about it this time.(:
