My opinion is that you’re probably on the right track looking for a replacement.

I’ve had pretty good luck brazing up and patching tanks over the years, but if I encounter one that continues to be a problem, I normally figure I’ve wasted enough time on it already. Just replace it and be done with it.

If you want to keep trying to patch it, I’ve had good luck welding up the crack, then smoothing out the area and adding a metal patch over the top to strengthen it up and maybe help absorb some of the stress. Probably depends on how big of an area you’d have to cover.
