You can put a thin washer (maybe .020 machine washer) behind the very back tapered bearing cup near the dif. This will move the entire shaft assembly forward and let you shim the front bearing properly.

There is a coupling with internal splines that couples the 2 shafts together and make sure you mark the front and rear ends. If you install it backwards it will come apart and cost big $. The IH service book does not point this out.

Its been a long time since I did this and I can't remember if you can get at that cup by removing the hydraulic pump or if you have to do a rear split. Sorry.

I don't know what causes this problem. It seems the new replacement bearings are thinner. This fix will last.
